The spool

The humble spool, holding its quiet miles of cotton or silk, has been unfurling a continuous, ordered line for millennia. This precise, patient act found its digital echo in the early mainframe era, where reels of magnetic tape performed the same mechanical ballet. Each reel, from the domestic sewing kit to the humming IBM 726 introduced in 1952, is the same object: a physical vessel unspooling an ordered sequence, one into fabric, the other into an invisible stream of ones and zeros.
