The ampersand, a familiar glyph, originated as a swift ligature of the Latin 'et', meaning 'and', a fluid stroke by Roman scribes to fuse two letters. Once the 27th character of the alphabet, its name derived from the recited "and per se and, " literally declaring it "& by itself is 'and'." This solid, ancient bridge, born of efficiency, continues to bind, allowing any name to settle and truly take its space.
